Both my mother and grandmother have always been sensitive to the spirit world. According to my mother’s knowledge, this sensitivity to the spirit world is said to be hereditary. Growing up, I had always tried to block it out. At the beginning of my graduate studies, I started a body of work centered around the idea of ‘supernatural landscapes.’ I was thinking about landscapes that possess ‘mana’ (in a variety of ways). Mana is a Hawaiian word that refers to spiritual energy of power and strength. The inspiration for this body of work derives from my journey of accepting and embracing my spirituality. For so many years I have attempted to explain away my spiritual experiences with logic. After the recent passing of my father, I have become hyper-aware of the supernatural world. In this body of work, I am documenting the spiritual experiences I’ve had on Oahu hiking trails.
This is an ongoing project.
